Celebrating our unsung heroes: The children of Foster Carers

Published 23 Oct 2024

As the Director of Affinity Fostering, I am constantly inspired by our foster families' incredible dedication and compassion. This October, as we honour The Fostering Network's Children of Foster Carers Month, I want to shine a light on the young people who play a pivotal role in the success of fostering within our fostering families.

These young individuals are the unsung heroes of our fostering community. Their unique role, , goes beyond just sharing their home; they share their hearts, their lives, and their families with the children who join them. The warmth and openness they demonstrate lay the foundation for a supportive and nurturing environment, crucial for the wellbeing of children who are fostered.

At Affinity, we have witnessed countless instances where the children of foster carers become confidants and companions to foster children, helping them navigate the complexities of integrating into a new family. These children continually prove their capacity for empathy and acceptance, whether through small acts of kindness, such as including them in playdates, or through more significant gestures like advocating for them at school.

We include our children of Foster Carers in lots of the great things we do at Affinity, like competitions and fun events. Our Pot of Gold summer scheme is also open to our children of foster carers, and we have lovely examples of the whole family coming together to participate in new activities, combining their Pots of Gold to enjoy exciting, memorable events together as a family.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude directly to you, the children of our Foster Carers. Your contributions, though they may sometimes go unnoticed, are invaluable. You exhibit maturity beyond your years and compassion that has a lasting impact, not only on those who come into your homes but also on your own personal growth. Your willingness to adapt, patience, and understanding are integral to the nurturing environment we strive to create. You are role models in your own right, showing how a family thrives when built on the principles of inclusion and understanding.

Thank you for all you do and for being an integral part of our Affinity Team. We are all very proud of you. A letter and some vouchers are coming to you this month, just as a small token of our appreciation for all you do and the inspiration you are.

Warm regards,

Andy
