Looked after children are placed in short term Foster care while plans are being made by their Local Authority to either return them home, be adopted or go into a long term fostering placement. A short term placement could last a few days, a few weeks or even longer. It is important in a placement like this that a sense of normality is established and a safe and secure environment is provided during what can be a stressful and upsetting time for a child.

Short term Foster Carers are expected to promote contact with the young person’s birth family, remaining positive about this relationship and being non-judgmental. Short term Foster Carers need to include the young person in their family life and help them find their potential so they can face their future with confidence.
